This lovely trio is playing Thursday evening at The Rumsey Wells, a fine pub in the center of Norwich.

Tangential is a lovely jazz trio playing a mix of material, from old and new jazz standards to originals written by Chris Downing or George McKay to quirky arrangements of the odd pop song, and some great grooves. Features Chris Dowding on trumpets/loops, Jake Lay on drums, me on double bass.

Because there’s no chord instrument as well as a big melodic gap between the high trumpet and the low bass, there’s lots of space to explore in the middle in the music with the loops, or bass vibrato or arco, or interesting drum patterns.

We aim for a balance of accessible contemporary jazz with a light touch of experimentalism, but, you, know, we have a few old school New Orleans two-beat stomps with wah-wah mute trumpet as well.
